Multi-Day Tours in Costa Rica
Some of the best places in Costa Rica cannot be visited in a day, and no amount of early departure fixes that. Tortuguero is reachable only by boat or small plane. Corcovado sits at the far end of the Osa Peninsula. The Caribbean coast is a different country in feel, and rushing it defeats the point.
These trips run two to four days. Lodging, guide, transport and park entries are arranged as one package, so you are not stitching together three bookings and hoping the timing works.
How a multi-day trip is put together
We pick you up wherever you are staying and handle every transfer from there. You are not renting a car, navigating gravel roads at dusk, or standing at a boat dock trying to work out which departure is yours.
Nights are spent in small lodges chosen for location rather than star rating — the point of staying in Tortuguero is being there at 5am when the wildlife is awake, which no amount of thread count substitutes for.
Where the extra nights genuinely pay off
Tortuguero and Corcovado are the clearest cases: both are protected, remote, and reward being present early and late in the day when animals move. Turtle nesting in particular happens at night, and a day trip structurally cannot include it.
The beach-hopping trips through Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula — Santa Teresa, Montezuma, Nosara, Ostional — work differently. Each beach is individually reachable, but visiting three of them in one day means spending the day in a vehicle. Two or three nights turns the same route into an actual holiday.
Timing and season
Turtle nesting is seasonal and varies by coast and species, so the Tortuguero and Ostional trips are worth planning around dates rather than booking blind. Tell us when you are travelling and we will tell you honestly whether you will see nesting or not — we would rather redirect you to a different trip than sell you a turtle tour in the wrong month.
The Caribbean and the Pacific have different rainfall patterns, which means a week that is wet in one place is often fine in the other. That is a real advantage of asking before booking.
What it costs
Multi-day trips start around $245 and run to roughly $800 depending on length, distance and lodging. As with our day tours, most are priced for a private group rather than per head, so smaller groups are not penalised.
Three of our trips — Nauyaca, Reserva Curú and Barra Honda — are sold both as a day trip and as an overnight, so they appear on both this page and the day tours page. If you are undecided, the overnight version is usually the better trip and the day version is the better use of a tight schedule.
