Guanacaste's Pacific coastline holds some of the most varied and beautiful beaches in Central America. On a single day you can stand on the crushed-shell floor of Playa Conchal — turquoise water so clear you can count the fish from the surface — and an hour later watch the sun go down over the calm protected bay of Playa Potrero. This four-day journey from San José visits five of the province's finest beaches across two dedicated beach days, using Tamarindo as a comfortable base.
**Day 1 — San José to Tamarindo.** Your private vehicle departs San José in the morning for the roughly 4.5-hour drive northwest through the Guanacaste plains. The route crosses the Tempisque Bridge and climbs into the dry tropical forest country that defines Guanacaste's interior. You arrive in Tamarindo in the afternoon with time to settle, walk the estuary shore, and catch the first Pacific sunset of the trip.
**Day 2 — Playa Langosta & Playa Grande.** The morning begins at Playa Langosta, a crescent of dark-gold sand just ten minutes south of Tamarindo's center. The beach sits at the mouth of the Langosta estuary, where the mangrove system meets the Pacific, and the tidal pools at low tide hold sea urchins, sally lightfoot crabs, and the occasional octopus. After Langosta, a short boat crossing over the Tamarindo estuary brings you to Playa Grande — a wide, undeveloped beach inside Las Baulas National Marine Park, one of the world's most important leatherback sea turtle nesting sites. The beach is pristine because the park prohibits development, and in the dry season the offshore winds create one of the cleanest long-break surf shores on the coast. Your guide provides fresh seasonal fruit and cold water while you spend the afternoon here.
**Day 3 — Playa Conchal, Flamingo & Potrero.** This is the headline day. Playa Conchal is named for the billions of crushed bivalve shells that replace sand on its beach floor — a natural phenomenon that gives the water an extraordinary turquoise clarity you don't see on conventional sand beaches. The water here is shallow and calm close to shore, ideal for swimming. From Conchal it's a short drive north to Playa Flamingo, one of Guanacaste's most elegant beaches: a long crescent of pale sand backed by low hills and fronted by a protected bay where the water calms. The afternoon ends at Playa Potrero, a quiet bay popular with local fishing families, where the pace drops and the sunset colours the water orange and pink.
**Day 4 — Breakfast and return.** A final breakfast at your accommodation, check-out at leisure, and private transport back to San José arriving in the late afternoon.
