About the Destination
Why Arenal Belongs on Every Costa Rica Itinerary
Arenal Volcano is the centerpiece of Costa Rica's adventure scene. The 1,670-metre cone rises almost perfectly symmetrical above the jungle, framed on one side by the clear waters of Lake Arenal and on the other by the dense rainforest of the national park. The base town, La Fortuna, sits just 12 km from the crater — close enough to feel the volcano's presence, far enough to be completely safe.
What sets Arenal apart is the sheer density of activities within a 30-minute radius: a 75-metre waterfall you can swim under, natural hot springs fed by geothermal heat, zip-lines through the cloud forest canopy, hanging bridge hikes, and the electric-blue waters of Río Celeste just 90 minutes away. Most visitors spend two or three nights and still feel they've barely scratched the surface.
As local guides who have operated tours in this region since 2019, we know which hot spring pools the tour buses skip, which trail gives the best volcano view on a partly cloudy morning, and how to reach the La Fortuna Waterfall before the afternoon crowds arrive. That local knowledge is the difference between a good Arenal trip and a great one.
Top Experiences
What to Do in Arenal & La Fortuna
Arenal Volcano Hike
Trek through old lava fields and primary rainforest inside Arenal Volcano National Park with a naturalist guide. The Sendero Coladas trail winds through a dramatic 1992 lava flow — watch for agoutis, coatis, and toucans overhead.
La Fortuna Waterfall
Follow 500 steps down through lush jungle to reach a 75-metre cascade feeding a crystal-clear natural swimming pool. Best visited before 9 am or after 3 pm to beat the crowds — one of the most beautiful swimming holes in Central America.
Arenal Hot Springs & Spa
Soak in volcanic thermal waters between 38°C and 42°C, surrounded by tropical gardens with the volcano as a backdrop. Evening visits are the most atmospheric — warm pools, jungle sounds, and the cone lit against the darkening sky.
Río Celeste Hike
A 90-minute drive leads to Tenorio Volcano National Park and the world's most vivid turquoise river — the result of a volcanic mineral reaction that turns the water an impossible sky-blue. Hike to the waterfall and the famous Teñidero mixing point.
La Fortuna Canyoning
Abseil down five tropical waterfalls — the tallest drops 35 metres — through a pristine jungle gorge near La Fortuna. Full safety gear and expert guides included. Ideal for families with kids 10+ and adults looking for a genuine adrenaline hit.
Lake Arenal Kayak
Lake Arenal is one of Central America's largest lakes. Kayak or stand-up paddle across glassy water with the volcano as your backdrop — a quieter, meditative Arenal experience that most visitors never get around to, but never forget.
When to Go
Best Time to Visit Arenal Volcano
Arenal sits in a notoriously moody microclimate. The volcano is visible roughly 40–50% of the time year-round regardless of season. Your best odds of a clear sky are in the dry season, but always plan outdoor activities for the morning — clouds typically build over the cone by early afternoon.
| Month | Weather | Volcano Views | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dec–Jan | Dry, sunny, cool nights | Best | High (peak season) |
| Feb–Apr | Dry, hot afternoons | Best | Moderate–High |
| May–Jun | Rains building, lush green | Good | Low (great value) |
| Jul–Aug | Wet season in full swing | Variable | Low |
| Sep–Oct | Rainiest months | Variable | Lowest (best prices) |
| Nov | Rain easing, fresh air | Good | Low–Moderate |
Getting There
How to Get to La Fortuna from San José or Liberia
From SJO (San José): La Fortuna is approximately 3 hours by private vehicle via Ciudad Quesada (Route 141). We offer private shuttle transfers from SJO airport directly to your La Fortuna hotel — no shared minivans, no unexpected stops.
From LIR (Liberia): The drive from Liberia airport is approximately 2.5 hours south along Route 1, then east through Cañas. A practical option if combining Guanacaste beaches with Arenal.
Jeep-Boat-Jeep (from Monteverde): The iconic transfer crosses Lake Arenal by speedboat — 30 minutes by taxi to the Río Arenal dock, 1-hour boat crossing, 45 minutes by jeep to La Fortuna. Around 3 hours total and far more scenic than any road route.
Accommodation
Where to Stay Near Arenal Volcano
La Fortuna town center is the main base, with hotels, restaurants, and tour operators within walking distance. Best for first-timers who want convenience and easy access to everything.
The Route 142 hot springs corridor (heading toward the volcano) is where most thermal-resort hotels sit. Staying here means hot springs are steps from your room and early-morning volcano views are private. Rates are higher, but the experience rewards it for a special trip.
Around Lake Arenal (Nuevo Arenal and the Tilarán side) offers a quieter, cooler alternative popular with cyclists, birdwatchers, and travelers who want to slow down. Best for self-drive visitors with a few days to explore.
Wildlife
Wildlife You'll See at Arenal
Arenal's mix of rainforest, lake, and volcanic terrain makes it one of the most biodiverse areas outside the Osa Peninsula. On a typical guided hike you can expect:
- Keel-billed and Chestnut-mandibled Toucans — calling loudly from the canopy, especially at dawn
- Three-toed Sloths — look for them hanging in cecropia trees along the lake road
- Howler and White-faced Capuchin Monkeys — both common in the national park trails
- Coatis and Agoutis — frequently spotted on the lava field trails at ground level
- Basilisk Lizards — the "Jesus Christ lizard" sprints across water surfaces near streams
- Strawberry Poison Dart Frogs — tiny, vivid red, found on the forest floor in leaf litter
- Caimans — visible from bridges and riverbanks around the La Fortuna river system
Practical Tips
Insider Tips for Your Arenal Visit
- Book all outdoor activities for the morning — the volcano is almost always cloud-covered by early afternoon.
- The free hot spring area near the Río Cholín bridge is a local secret: warm, uncrowded, and authentic. Bring water shoes.
- La Fortuna Waterfall opens at 7 am — arriving at opening means fewer than 20 people at the pool. By 10 am it can be 200+.
- Bring a rain jacket even in dry season. The volcano's slopes generate their own weather, and afternoon showers are common even in February.
- Combine Arenal with Monteverde via the jeep-boat-jeep connection — it's one of the most scenic short transfers in Central America and saves 2 hours versus the road.
