About this tour
Costa Rica's Caribbean coast is a different country from the Pacific. The jungle grows thicker, the beaches are wilder, the food tastes of coconut and Afro-Caribbean spice, and the wildlife is different enough that people who have been to Manuel Antonio and Monteverde are genuinely surprised by what they find here. This three-day journey from San José covers the best of the southern Caribbean in a single trip.
**Day 1 — San José to Puerto Viejo.** Your private vehicle takes the scenic Route 32, passing through Braulio Carrillo National Park — a stretch of primary rainforest that tunnels over the road before descending to the Caribbean lowlands. You arrive in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca in the early afternoon. Check in, explore the reggae-soundtracked town center, and walk the black-sand Playa Negra as the late sun hits the water. Puerto Viejo is small enough to cover on foot and lively enough that the evening has real energy: Caribbean sodas, fresh ceviche, and cold Imperial on the beach.
**Day 2 — Cahuita Reef & Jaguar Rescue Center.** An early morning drive (30 minutes north) brings you to Cahuita National Park for the boat snorkel tour. Costa Rica has one coral reef — this is it. The water is warm (28–30°C), shallow over the reef (3–8 meters), and clearest from February to April. Your bilingual marine guide snorkels beside you and identifies what you'd otherwise miss: spotted eagle rays on the sandy bottom, green sea turtles grazing on seagrass, sergeant majors defending coral heads from fish three times their size, and the occasional barracuda hovering motionless in the blue above the reef edge. After returning to shore you walk the jungle-edge beach trail back through the park — howler monkeys and white-faced capuchins in the canopy above you, raccoons and white-nosed coatis foraging below. Back in Puerto Viejo by late morning for the Jaguar Rescue Center tour. Despite the name, the center focuses on sloths, spider monkeys, toucans, and a remarkable collection of other rescued native species — it is one of the finest wildlife rescue centers in Central America and the guided tour is genuinely moving. The afternoon is yours: the town, the beach, a Caribbean dinner.
**Day 3 — Beach Hopping & Return.** The final morning is for the beaches south of Puerto Viejo — some of the finest in Costa Rica. Playa Cocles (1km south) has a reef break that produces clean surf and calm water in the sheltered sections. Playa Chiquita (2km south) is quieter and lined with coconut palms that lean over the sand at low tide angles. Punta Uva (4km south) has a palm-fringed headland and water the colour of old glass — clear, green, and warm. After a final swim and lunch on your own account, private transport returns you to San José, arriving by early evening.
