Three days is the shortest trip we will plan without gently arguing with you first — and then we plan a lot of them, because the people asking are usually working with a fixed layover or a tight leave allowance. The answer that works is always the same: pick one region and go deep. The answer that fails is the one you will find on booking sites, which strings three regions together and hands you a vacation spent watching the Pan-American Highway.
La Fortuna wins the one-region contest almost every time. It is the closest world-class destination to San José, and within a 20-minute radius it stacks an active volcano, hot springs fed by that volcano, waterfalls, hanging bridges and some of the easiest wildlife spotting in the country.

The route, day by day

Day 1: SJO to La Fortuna (1 night)

Skip the rental counter — with two nights on the ground, an hour spent on paperwork is real money. The private transfer from SJO is 130 kilometres and about 3 hours at $200 for the vehicle, climbing through coffee country with a stop wherever you want one. Arrive by mid-afternoon and spend the first evening in volcano-heated hot springs, which is both the correct way to shed a flight and the one activity that works in any weather.

Day 2: The volcano day (1 night)

Your only full day, so it is the big one: the Arenal volcano and hot springs day, run privately. Morning on the 1968 lava-field trails with a naturalist — Arenal's cone is the postcard, but the guide is what turns a walk into a trip. Afternoon free, or add the Místico hanging bridges, where you are level with the canopy and sloths stop being a rumour. Clear-sky odds are best at dawn and just after sunrise; if the summit is socked in at noon, wait, it usually lifts.

Day 3: Back to SJO (Fly out)

One more morning before the road: La Fortuna waterfall is 500 steps down and 500 back up and worth every one of them, or take a slow breakfast and a chocolate tour instead. The transfer back is another 3 hours, which makes flights from about 4pm safe and anything before noon a bad idea. If your flight is early, we move you to a San José airport hotel the night before rather than gambling on the road.

Is 3 days enough for Costa Rica?

Enough for one region done well, which is genuinely worth doing — most people leave saying Arenal alone justified the flight. It is not enough for the volcano-and-beach trip people picture. If you can find two more days, our 5-day itinerary adds the Pacific coast and changes the character of the whole trip.

Could I do Manuel Antonio in 3 days instead?

Yes, and it is the right call if beaches and sloths matter more to you than volcanoes. The SJO transfer is 170 kilometres and about 3 hours at $195, and the guided park morning is the single best wildlife hour on the Pacific. Same structure as above: one base, two nights.

Should I rent a car for three days?
