Plenty of travelers assume Arenal means flying into San José. It doesn't. From Liberia the drive east crosses the Guanacaste plains to Cañas, then follows the northern shore of Lake Arenal — a genuinely beautiful stretch — with the volcano growing in the windshield for the last hour. If your itinerary is volcano first and beaches after, landing at LIR and running this route saves you a backtrack across the country later.
Route notes: Paved throughout. The lakeside section is winding but scenic; we build in a stop at one of the Lake Arenal viewpoints. Best volcano visibility is usually early morning or late afternoon.
