About this tour
Every traveler who has driven Costa Rica's Pacific coast road knows the ritual: you stop at the Tarcoles bridge, look down, and there they are — dozens of American crocodiles, some over four meters long, sunning on the banks like prehistoric driftwood. This day trip takes you past the bridge-and-binoculars experience and onto the river itself: a guided crocodile boat tour through the Tarcoles estuary, where the captains know individual animals by name and bring you close enough to count teeth — safely, from a covered boat. The river is also one of the country's best birding spots: scarlet macaws commute overhead between the mangroves and the beach almonds, and herons, roseate spoonbills and ospreys work the banks.
After the morning's wildlife, the afternoon turns pure beach. Ten minutes down the coast, Punta Leona is a private nature reserve and beach club tucked between Tarcoles and Jacó, famous for Playa Blanca — a calm, white-sand cove framed by jungle that stays warm and swimmable year-round. With a day pass you get access to the beaches, pools, showers and restaurants; the swimming is gentle enough for small children, and the white-faced monkeys in the surrounding forest provide the entertainment between dips.
Your private driver-guide handles the whole day: hotel pickup in San José around 7 am, the scenic 1.5-hour descent to the coast, boat tour first while the wildlife is active, then the beach until late afternoon. Because the vehicle is yours alone, the schedule flexes — stay an extra hour on the sand or detour for the bridge photo stop on the way home.
This is the easiest combination of wildlife and beach in Costa Rica — crocodiles, scarlet macaws and a white-sand swim in one day, all within two hours of the capital. Bring towels, swimsuits and a camera with zoom; the crocodiles supply the drama on their own.
