About this tour
Ciudad Esmeralda — the "Emerald City" — is exactly what it sounds like: a hidden canyon on the Río La Vieja in the green hill country of San Carlos, where the river has cut a slot through rock walls more than 80 meters high and moss, ferns and filtered light turn everything a deep emerald. You walk the riverbed itself, wade and swim through crystalline turquoise pools between the walls, scramble over boulders, and follow the canyon up to the Cascada El Zafiro — the "Sapphire Waterfall" — at its head. It is run by La Vieja Adventures, a local outfitter whose guides grew up on this river.
This is a full day trip from San José. The drive north into Alajuela's Zona Norte takes roughly 2.5–3 hours, so pickup is early. At the operator's base you gear up with a helmet and life vest and set off on foot with the local guides into the canyon. Expect to get wet — this is a river trek with swimming sections and some easy scrambling — and to spend a few hours inside the canyon before the walk back out. The setting is genuinely spectacular and still largely off the tourist trail.
