About this tour

There is no natural blue quite like Rio Celeste blue. It isn't the turquoise of a tropical ocean or the blue-green of a glacier lake — it's an almost electric cornflower, the kind of color you expect from a special effect rather than chemistry. The science is interesting (tiny silicate particles refracting light at a specific wavelength), but the experience is simply astonishing: a river that appears to have been poured from a paint pot, threading through the floor of Tenorio Volcano National Park.

The hike to Rio Celeste is genuine rainforest hiking — muddy in places, hilly in others, and consistently beautiful throughout. The trail follows the river upstream, passing the pool where two volcanic tributaries merge and the color transformation happens before your eyes, through forest where three-wattled bellbirds call like struck bells overhead, to the 30-meter Catarata Rio Celeste — a waterfall so perfectly framed by jungle that it looks like something a set designer would build.

Your private naturalist guide knows this trail in every season and makes the difference between spotting the tapir that crosses the trail at dawn and walking past its tracks. The park is managed strictly for conservation — no swimming in the blue pools (the silicate particles can irritate skin), but a natural clear-water swimming hole is a short walk off the main trail.
