Let's be honest, because we live here: San José is not why you fly to Costa Rica. But almost every trip starts or ends in "Chepe," and the difference between a wasted airport night and a great first evening is knowing where to point yourself. The historic core has real treasures — the Teatro Nacional, the gold and jade museums, the Central Market's lunch counters — and the Central Valley around the city holds coffee farms and volcano craters that make world-class day trips.
What to do in San José
- The city food & culture walk — Central Market sodas, the Teatro Nacional, and the barrios' street art, eaten and explained by a local.
- Poás Volcano & La Paz waterfalls — peer into a steaming crater lake before lunch.
- Irazú & the Orosi Valley — the highest volcano and the prettiest valley drive in the Central Valley.
- Doka coffee estate — seed-to-cup on a working farm, with Starbucks' showcase Hacienda Alsacia next door.
- Museo del Oro & Museo del Jade — pre-Columbian gold and the world's largest jade collection, both downtown.
Getting there
You're already here — SJO airport sits 20 minutes west of downtown. This is the hub of our private transfer network: every route we run starts or ends within an hour of the city, which is why our team bases here.
Best time to visit
The Central Valley has the country's kindest climate — "eternal spring," 22–27°C year-round. December visits get the capital dressed up: the Festival de la Luz parade and the zapote fairs. Any month works; it's the one destination where seasonality barely matters.
Where to stay
Barrio Escalante for restaurants and walkable evenings (our default recommendation), Sabana/Rohrmoser for modern hotels, historic core for museum proximity but quiet nights. Flying out early? An airport-area hotel in Alajuela beats a 5am crosstown taxi.
Insider tips
- One night at the start or end is the right dose for most itineraries — we will tell you honestly when it isn’t.
- The Central Market closes by early evening; go for LUNCH — a casado at a counter soda is the true national dish experience.
- Uber works well in the city and is the easy answer at night.
- Leave buffer for airport runs: San José traffic between 7–9am and 4–7pm is the least pura-vida thing in the country.

Is San José worth visiting at all?
For a half-day of museums, the market and the theater — yes, especially with a guide who eats there. As a multi-night base, only if you are day-tripping volcanoes and coffee farms. We plan it as a comma, not a sentence.
Is San José safe for tourists?
The tourist core is fine by day with city sense: no flashy phones on empty streets, licensed red taxis or Uber at night, and skip the areas your hotel tells you to skip. Our safety guide covers the specifics.
Where should we stay near the airport?
For pre-dawn flights, the Alajuela airport strip (10 minutes from departures). For an actual evening, Barrio Escalante is worth the 25-minute ride — the best food neighborhoods in the country, and we book the table.
