About this tour
Guayabo is the largest and most important pre-Columbian archaeological site in Costa Rica — an entire town, occupied from roughly 1000 BC until it was mysteriously abandoned around 1400 AD, set in premontane rainforest on the slopes of the Turrialba Volcano. What survives is remarkable: the circular stone foundations of dozens of conical houses, paved causeways radiating from open plazas, stairways and tombs, petroglyphs carved with jaguars and spirals, and an aqueduct system so well engineered that the channels still carry spring water today — earning Guayabo a World Heritage of Civil Engineering designation. A guide is what turns it from a field of stones into a city: the layout, the engineering and the unanswered question of why it was abandoned only make sense with the story attached.
The second half of the day moves to CATIE — the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center — just outside Turrialba, one of the most important agricultural research institutions in the Americas. Its grounds hold botanical gardens, a lake full of waterbirds, and one of the world's largest living collections of coffee and cacao. The coffee tour walks you from the plant through the whole process — picking the cherry, the bean, roasting and a tasting — with the depth you'd expect from a place that researches coffee for the entire region.
This is a full day trip from San José. Turrialba lies about 1.5–2 hours east through the Cartago highlands and coffee country, so pickup is in the morning. Your private vehicle and bilingual guide are yours for the day. The Guayabo National Monument entrance and the CATIE coffee tour are paid on site and are not included in the tour price — both are modest. Bring closed shoes for the archaeological trails and a light rain layer; Turrialba is green for a reason.
